Bored and its raining!

Heavy rain and flash flooding. Looks like December this year will be very similar to December last year.

by Kelly Smith

They are just so sexy and cute.

You've probably seen Kelly's work around the place; in the 2008 Semi-Permanent, in Vogue Australia or perhaps you even got along to her exhibition over at Gallery 696 (which finishes today). Either way I'm sure you'll agree that her work brings a heart warming smile followed by a buzz of amazement. An incredible talent.

Let's change things with POW!

As it get's hotter and hotter here in Melbourne I spend more and more time dreaming of snow. Fresh powder, snow covered trees, rocks to jump over and snow angles to create. But as I've started to notice the snow changing so have others and now we can help to Protect Our Winters: POW (http://www.protectourwinters.org/)

WhaT's next?

Normally I like to keep myself pretty busy, either with work, friends and usually some form of education. But two weeks ago I finished the bible college class I was taking at nights (it was really interesting and very eye opening). Most of my friends live on the west of town these days and as much as I'd love to move to live closer to them all I just don't have the cash.
But here is the dilemma. What am I going to do with my spare time till mid next year when I'll pick up another bible college subject? It may not be heaps and heaps of spare time but there will be some.
Sure there will be snow in Japan in Feb (again if I can afford to go) and Christmas, New Years and my birthday are in there.
And there is always hanging out with friends.
And I can always work. But these are thing will happen anyway.
I need something new.
For those of you that know me outside of this internet box you'll know that I've recently taken up skateboarding as a way of keeping up to speed for snowboarding but still....

I feel boredom approaching and I really don't like it.
Sure new friends take a bit of time to brake-in so that will keep me amused for a little while but after that....

... I guess I'll just have to have more parties. That should keep me amused for a bit. Yes. Parties. That's what I'll do.

Little Gamers t-shirt

Little Gamers are webcomic which you should be reading if you're not already. It's pretty much pure gold all the time.... except for when it's poo...
They have a new t-shirt and seeing has how the whole economy has gone belly up shipping one of these to Australia becomes more expensive than the t-shirt itself. BUT. I have a plan. One of you guys could by the shirt for me. I'm a Small.
Just email me and I'll give you the postal address.
And in return you will feel a loving warmth from knowing you've helped clothe a fellow human.

Birds of Tokyo my hack review

Gig out far. Far far from the city. Bogans. Hit on by 17 and 40 year olds - eew.
Fading Hour excellent but mixing bad for back of the venue - these guys are going places for sure.
Calling all Cars; the same as always - good but don't see them going further than being a great supporting band (loads of cash can always change that tho).
Birds of Tokyo Not bad as the headlining act they didn't have to work hard for the audience to get into it and they didn't (but it was there gig *shrugs* so that's far enough). Perhaps they thought the same thing as my friend and I when we rocked up "where on earth are we? we are leaving as SOON as we can" watching the ppl was interesting... random ass grabbing by both sexes! Most over 30 years old (never been to a gig with such an old audience).
As we walked in my friend turned to me looked me straight in the eyes and said "we're not in Cansis anymore Toto" too stunned by the crowd all I could do was node in agreeance.

There was one thing (other than the tunes themselves) that I appreciated. Wading back through the crowd after getting drinks I spot something off to the side - a t-shirt. I look at, yes it's what I think it is. Excitedly I dive to grab my friends attention and yell as loud as I can "there is a guy back there wearing a Penny Arcade t-shirt; that's cool" she turns and smiles at me and we start trying to move forward again but over the dull roar of the crowd I hear a very loud and clear "Thank you" coming from the direction of the t-shirt. I like to think webcomic geekiness was shared that night and a spark of hope flaring in that very moment.

Snow in New Zealand

Almost a month ago I returned from two weeks snowboarding in New Zealand at Cardrona. It seems almost a silly thought with the sun actually shinning outside and warmer weather now greeting us Melbournians.
Still I thought I'd post a few pics from the trip. The trip that gave me a wonderful parting gift; bronchitis. With only one week of real fun boarding and not much of a snow dump in that time I can't say that I flew home too happy. Boarding with a bunch of mates helps make any situation fun though so all was good in the end on some level.

And we're back

Greetings happy people!
Well I'm back. I've changed a few things as you can see. Added a few things too.

You can now catch me on Twitter - like the rest of the 'civilised' world.
Followers has been added and I've updated my 'Buddies' list of websites. Yeah for friends starting blogs and having websites :)

I plan on stay up to date with blogging this time (feel free to email me abuse if I don't).

Life has swept me up

Here I am simply to say Life has swept me up. Stolen my feet and is running a race that I had never planned on beginning. A race I didn't even know existed.

Things more quickly but time moves slower. More commitments and more chances for greater joy are pushing and filling my lungs with air and my heart with something one might call love.

I will return here. When things settle. When a norm is found and when I am ready to share small trivial things with you all again.

The Collectables this Saturday

These guys have the stamina of rhino's! I really can't explain how great these guys are to watch. The music the banter between them - its an incredible stage dynamic.
The gig is a Barbukka on Smith St - get there at 8pm and you'll get to see Sweetmac and The Trips.

Being sick sucks

I don't know how you feel about being sick but I can't stand it. I'm all for sleeping in and not doing much sometimes but when your stuck in bed couching, sleeping drenched in sweat and with your whole body sore and aching - its horrible.
But finally after way too long I'm back - not a 100% get but ready to kick out some posts and checking out gigs and exhibitions, public lectures and whatever else takes my fancy.

This morning I received a email from those helpful ppl over at FasterLouder telling me a little more about the new laws regarding a lockout or curfew for the city. 2am. 2am is when you need to be in a club, bar, pub or whatever because if you walk out to get some cash from the ATM across the road at 2:10am you wont be getting back in - that's it, night over.
Of course there is an exception to the rule. And guess what it is? Yeah - it is the place where you can destroy your whole life and that of your family, the place where children have died, the place that encourages you to gamble every last cent you have while knowing that the house always wins. You guessed it Crown Casino. Because hey, the government is fine with letting people walk in and drink, smoke and gamble it all away at any time.

But you've heard enough from me. Read this properly write article.

The Collectables tonight + a gallery thing

The Collectables are playing tonight! I did know this and I've known for a little while but sometimes things just slip my mind - my apologies.
It wasn't till I checked my iCal (Mac calendar if you needed to know) that I realised I am very busy tonight.
Their is the Dreaming Machine Gallery exhibition opening at 6pm, which has so many different Melbourne artists involved I'm not going to even type them all out (check the poster below inside). And then we got The Collectables playing at the Brunswick Hotel with the supporting act on at 9:30 and The Collectables on at 10:30! Somewhere in there I'm going to have to find some food too... hopefully the gallery thing will have some canapes floating around and I can just fill up on those - now there's a thought.

Miserere - Psalm 51

I listen to two beautiful and compelling songs with the name Miserere; one by Andrea Bocelli & Zucchero and the other by The Cat Empire. Reading the history, what miserere means and were it comes from, I'm taken even further into an incredible awe.
Read the Miserere (Allegri) on wikipedia and you'll also see what I mean. But first read Psalm 51 below. The reason this Psalm is referred to as Miserere is because in Latin the first line read "Miserere mei, Deus" - "Have mercy on me, O God".

Psalm 51

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
1 Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.

4 Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
and justified when you judge.

5 Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will turn back to you.

14 Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God,
you who are God my Savior,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15 Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.

16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.

17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
to build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
in burnt offerings offered whole;
then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Scripture taken from Biblegateway.com and TNIV 2005.

Gadin to me
Amiriche it's your birthday! happy birthday
yay... can you post this in your blog?

15 April, 2008

Today is my birthday

I'm 26 now. I feel the same but I've been thinking more on how little I've actually achieved in these 26 years still I've enjoyed it.
I've received a few phone calls, got a few emails, got a kiss from my mum this morning and will be heading out to dinner with the family tonight. Present wise its been pretty quite but I really don't want or need anything so that doesn't bother me - I'd much rather friends use there money on something worth while than something I potentially wont even like. So if you were planning on sending me a present how about you buy a goat or pig or chicken from World Vision. That'll be a much better present and you just know whoever receives it will be far more appreciative of a chicken than me. Ducks are different though - I'd love a pet duck.
I thought maybe I'd share an email I got from one of my friends. We haven't been friends for years and years or anything, in fact it probably hasn't even been one year yet, but here is a snippet of her kind words to me on this day - my birthday.

"I feel now is a good time to say I'm so glad I know you. Its been so much fun hanging out, going to a metal gig, bike rides, having 'special lattes', drinks, getting to know you, having you there to bounce ideas off and keep me focussed and calm, and introducing me to all these cool new things.

I admire your loyalty, unwavering faith, inventiveness, creativity, originality, and gumption.

So thanks for your friendship and I look forward to celebrating many more birthdays with you.
Can't wait for Robot on Thursday. :)

With much love my friend, Joce

PS. Oh, and thanks for still hanging out with me even though I've never played Mario :-D"

Below is a funny pic I found while roaming the internets..... its from Eclectech look at his face; too funny.

L.A.M.B. Shoes

Ok, so, L.A.M.B. started ages ago and is the brain child of Gwen Stefani - we all know that. But what I would like to know is how often do the designs for L.A.M.B. shoes get updated? And do they ever go on sale? Here in auzzie-land you can get them through the Elastics website but were can I try them on. The other thing is that half the designs look pretty normal just with a little lambie on the side - where is the stuff that is different? Where is that crazy out there style that made her a fashion player to start with? Just makes me think its run by some boring guy in a pair of old jeans and grubby t and how probably hasn't spoken to anyone in a long time. I did find some that were interesting in the end though; you just know good looking people wear these shoes. First up for the ladies the Chartres II. Next for all you super clean guys we got the white Miehana's. And lastly coz Stefani has kids she cares about the kids and you really can't have a family without having matching footwear.

Like Bears gig - April 11

Those lovable guys Like Bears are playing more gigs - w00t!
April 11 at the Espy, 8pm along side... The Polites, Faye Blais from Canada AND Temple of Tunes from Castlemaine.

You can get their EP from here.

If you haven't heard them before the best way to describe them is... "like a rocksy-folksy version of your favorite Milan Kundera book read by some guy who wants to be Joe Strummer, Tom Waits and Daniel Johnston all at once!
Though some say they sound like Pedro the Lion, The Flaming lips,Arcade Fire, M.Ward, Nick Drake and with a little Art of Fighting." That's what it says on the RANDOM site anyway.

mmm pretty

I love sparklers. There is just something about them that makes you feel like a child again. Full of wonder and joy. For no matter how often I encounter them in the dead of night when there is very little light that sparkler holds so much! Hopes and dreams, stories and adventures - there is just something magical about sparklers.

New toy-Lenore: the cute little dead girl

It wasn't meant to happen but somehow I was drawn in - forced to walk down those stairs that take me to the underworld that is Minotaur. And there, as I strolled around the store with no intention of purchasing, I saw it. A 8" Lenore vinyl figure - I needed it. I picked it up, looked at it from every angle possible; putting my face on the plastic window in the vain hope of being able to see slightly more of the back of this fantastic figurine.
I studied the figure trying to determine if it was possibly that this 8" toy would fit on my work desk. Could I have more toys on my desk? Should I buy it knowing that it wont ever make its way to my house for a very long time? I'm a loosing a battle to toys? I'm I loosing a grip on reality buy purchasing more and more? well the simple answer to that last one is that I lost reality a long time ago, which makes it easy to understand and reason that there was nothing wrong when I walked out of Minotaur a little poorer, swinging that royal purple bag - inside; my new toy.

Pi Day; yeah Pie

Whether you know it or not today is Pi day. Pi = 3.14159265

From Pi Day.org

is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi = 3.1415926535... Pi Day is celebrated by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14th.

If you're not a math enthusiast and just like pie, like me, then you'll still like this pic - thank you Homer.

What to do...

What do I do when I really don't feel like working anymore? Simple. Play with toys on my desk and take photo's :)
As you can see I've got a few different toys. Here is what I've got:
  • Three Dunny's from the 2006 LA Series; pink-Fawn Gehweiler; Hollywood-Chad Phillips; tan with red-Blaine Fontana
  • and finally paper toy Ninja's - these ninja's are those from the Little Gamer webcomic - making paper toys is just another fun way to fill in some time.

A gig for Saturday and a day trip for me

This Saturday Fading Hour, a band from Melbourne, are playing down in the Frankston region. They are exceptionally good and well worth the long trip down that way for. The gig is being held at the Peninsula Lounge, 475 Moorooduc Highway, Moorooduc. Its 12 bucks entry and for that you get Fading Hour, Ink from NSW and Amphetame from those over there the US of A.

I'm pretty excited about it. Planning on heading down there earlier in the day. Having a BBQ and really just kicking back till its time to for the amps.

11 March, 2008

A rant, a gig and an exhibition

I always have such high hopes of actually writing an entry every day (except Sunday) but as you may have noticed it never quite happens. Don't get me wrong its nothing to do with a lack of things to say - I could talk, banter and fence till the cows come home - it just never quite relates back to an entry. Perhaps another day I'll speak to you about how women have changed over the years and much understanding and passion for feminism in its truest form has been almost lost but I'm no expert on this; but that's what a blog is for - un-research ignorant rants.
Perhaps I'll ramble on about C.S. Lewis and how I find almost everything his written incredible 'food for thought'...
But till those days come I'll just let you know what gig's and exhibition I'm going to or have been to.

Let's start with what I'm going to. This Friday (14 March) at the Noise Bar on Albert St, Brunswick The Collectables are playing with Zeptepi and The Uncomfortables from the UK. 6 bucks entry; starting at 8pm.

And now.... for an exhibition I went to earlier - last Friday. Fine detail - a real whymsical fantasy and fairy tale feel to the exhibition. You can see some of the work over at City of Reubens.

Japanese Bath House

This last trip to Japan was fantastic, that's not to say the first time wasn't great; it was, but this time. This time I got to indulge in a traditional Japanese Hot Bath.
If you've never been to Japan and had a hot bath or to Korea and tried one of their baths that's ok. You are missing out. But its ok.
Want to know why? Melbourne has a Japanese Bath House - that's why.
I'm talking traditional, naked, hours of soaking and relaxing bath.
If you've got a few spare hours I emplore you. Go to the bath house. Put down the TV remote, turn the game off and read your book some other time - head to the bath house instead. Soak and have a massage; you wont regret it.

01 March, 2008

just one of those days...

It happens, on occasion, were for some strange reason you just can't remember what you're meant to be doing. Today was one of those days for me. I'm so very sure that I was meant to being doing something, something important.
No-one has called to ask where I am so maybe it wasn't that important. I can recall some VIP party for some launch of something or other that I was going to attend but really... I just can't be bothered.
It's just one of those days.
A vague feeling of something in the back of my mind.
The complete and utter lack of enthusiasm to leave my house.
For Saturday you may thing its sad of me but really I'm more than happy to chill at home, read my CS Lewis book, play my PS2 and watch a little TV - its rare being able to do any of them.
I may even find the time to put a sheet on my bed ;)

shoes. DC shoes

A friend picked up a pair of DC's the other day and they are completely green. Seriously everywhere! The sole, the stitching, the laces - everything!
He really doesn't know much about shoes so when asked for more info about them, well... nothing.
Here's my thought.
Back in 2005 DC and a restaurant called the Spotted Pig collaborated on a pair of shoes for the employees. They came up with these bright orange DC shoes that had a little pig at the back of the shoe. Since then they were released to the public in August 2007. I think he's got a variation of them.

But that's not completely the part that is driving me nuts. It the fact that I can remember seeing this photo of the shoes back in 2005 sitting on this giant plate surrounded by salad, like they were a dish on the menu.

Instead I'll just give you this, not so exciting, pic I stole from the good ppl at Freshness mag.

Note from Georgia Fields & the Freeways

Dearest friends!

My Manchester Lane show is drawing ever-closer, like a distant light flickering on the horizon...

I'M SO EXCITED!!! I think I might have just wet my pants a little bit from excitement!

So, for those of you who need the info again...

Wednesday 5th March
Manchester Lane
(36 Manchester Lane, Melbourne 3000)
Supports on from 8pm, tickets at the door

I've had one rehearsal with the string players, and they're so good they made me cry... There'll be brass players on the night too, plus a confused children's toy, extra vocalists, and as always my wonderful band The Freeways!

But wait, there's more...

Ben Manusama (you might remember Ben from such gigs as My Album Launch) is kicking the night off with his ukulele, acoustic ensemble and some brand new songs. Think somewhere between Marvin Gaye and Jose Gonzales. He played me his new ditty the other day and I've been singing it ever since! Genius.

Sarah Humphreys (soulful nu-folk singer-songwriter from Sydney) will also be joining us.. Judith and I saw her in January and I was blown away. She is a dynamo, and we're so lucky to have her!

If you're one of those old-timey folks who still listens to the radio, tune in to Triple R on this Monday 3rd March - Judith and I will be playing live-to-air and doing a short interview sometime between 8pm and 10pm!

I better go, I'm busy making some more "Golden Book" albums for sale on the 5th...

See you at Manchester Lane!

I didn't count 1000 best I trust him...

If you managed to make it through the door, up the old school wooden stairs and actually into the Bus Gallery tonight you did well. Honestly that space was tiny! With hoards of people outside and jammed into that tiny space I'm amazed I felt still breathing.
In case you missed it tonight was the opening of Two's solo exhibition 1000 cans. He hand painted 1000 cans - one every day for about 18 months.
This show was amazing - he's work mesmerizing. I overheard one guy who explained it perfectly "you can't choose one favourite but three... that might be possible".

Seeing Two's work evolve over the cans is captivating. He's work is flowing and has an almost liquid feel to it. With certain images appearing many times over you seem to be reading a story of a man - Two or someone that looks a lot like him - and his encounters with owls, fish, butterflies and the occasional goat and elephant; there is more as there always is but really you need to check it out for yourself.

Bus Gallery - 117 Little Lonsdale (its a grey building). It's on for a while check the poster a few posts back for actual dates.

Below are a few pics - quality isn't great and don't provide any justice.

In my little universe

Everyone *tips hat*
Here is something to help break up the monotony of the day; it's story time!

Currently, on both the left and the right of our house, we have Auctions coming up shortly. One side is an apartment and the other side is a lush house.

On the weekend my Dad returned from the country. On his trip back in he passed two Goanna's - from the same family as the Komodo dragon - one was live and quickly ran across the road. The other... road kill and few kilometers back. Dad - being the joker and stirrer that he is (yes, he's were I get it from :P) - stops and picks up the dead Goanna. You know coz he's doing a service... - helping those in the area coz no-one wants a smelly dead goanna near their house.
The dead Goanna comes home with dad - tongue sticking out and all intact.

Why? Is that what you asked? Why would he bring a dead goanna home; well I'm getting to that. But really the first answer is always Mum.
??? you're still wondering, huh.
To scare mum and play tricks on Mum is a favorite past time for Dad - but you can't do it too often; people catch on after a while - you have to space these things out. Make sure they are really good.

Dad's home now. Mum goes to help dad empty the car, follows him out to the garage, walks into the garage. "EEK! Oh HA HA! very funny. Trying to scar me like that" heheeeee I laughed; Mum laughed later. The dead Goanna resting on the trailer right were mum has to walk, heheee.
Mum's reaction first - done.
Dad moves on. As I sit outside reading the paper he moves the Goanna to a step where students go to smoke - we wait till they come outside. Not really that much of a reaction either - even with a little encouragement from Dad's mock "oh no! what is it? its alive! careful. get back! oh what is it? oh no!" still no really good reaction.
who's next?
Well my older sister would have been straight after mum if she was around but lucky for her she wasn't visiting that day.

The Goanna stays outside as it slowly bloats and starts smelling.

hmmm who could be next? Its got to be done quickly. bingo! Dad chuckles at the thought of his next victim. Our neighbors. hehee
These "better than thou" and little sense of humor neighbors will fell it on a day they wont be so amused. Auction day

The plan.
Preserve the Goanna.
Sit it on our fence. Sit it on our nature strip in the grass. Lots of people to scare.

This is what happens at my house - the universe that lives within our walls.

Lumo and Valentine's Day is gone

Last night I saw a movie. It wasn't a romantic movie or a movie being viewed with a "special" someone. In fact it was watched with three other special someones - my mum and two sisters. We went and saw Lumo.

Lumo is a young women from the Congo and the movie is two years of her story; a reflection of thousands like hers.
As war has crippled eastern Congo for the last 16 years, women are targeted by rebel soldiers and horrifically raped - this includes soldiers using sticks and even their guns to penetrate the Congonese women - as form of war tactic to spread terror and fear among the people.
From this brutal rape many women are left with a fistula— a condition that renders them incontinent, threatens their ability to give birth in the future and without surgery risk death.

Lumo is rejected by her fiancé and cast aside by her family because of the rape (how will she bear children) and because of the shame of incontinence. Lumo finds her way to the one place that may save her: a hospital for rape survivors set on the border with Rwanda. It is here that Lumo is looked after by a team of "Mama's" for the next two years. Free surgery is provided to help restore the ladies so they may return home.

American journalist Ann Curry's report on Feb 13 2008 about the war in Congo.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/23143082#23148340
and
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/23143082#23143082

Donations to the only hospital helping these women (Heal Africa) can be made on their website.
http://www.healafrica.org/

Personally I found the movie very informative and well worth watching. I did note that one of the ladies behind me was making a few nervous and uneasy noises - so be warned some may find the movie too raw - there is only a small amount of sugar coating on this one.

Two - 1000 Cans

He responds to Two; he resides in Melbourne and originates from Japan.
Two has finally finished hand painting 1000 spray cans - yes 1000!
My first thought was 'wow, that's cool!' But after a moment you stop and wonder...why?
Most of you will have heard the story of the Japanese girl Sadako Sakasi. Suffering from the "atom bomb disease" she was told a myth - fold 1000 paper cranes and the gods will grant you a wish. Sadako didn't reach her goal and died a year after her diagnosis but Two has reached 1000. Not a 1000 paper cranes and not because he wanted a wish granted but he's done it and just coz.

An exhibition of the 1000 cans will be shown in Melbourne at Bus Gallery. Opening 27th Feb 6pm - check out the poster for more details. See you there.

King of Kong: A fistful of quarters

This is being release, I believe, Feb 28 in Australia.
Last night I managed to see it with a friend.
King of Kong is a documentary style movie about two guys. One holds the record for high score on the arcade classic Donkey Kong. The other guy is challenging him 25 years after the high score was created; it has been un-threatened till now.
I saw this with a gamer friend surrounded by arty cutting edge fashion and culture fans. As we left the theatre, after so much laughing at the movie and at the ppl in the movie, I just had to ask. "As funny as that was did you feel like you were being mocked at times?" The answer "Yes and no"
This movie is about hard core arcade gamers. We're talking about the classic games from the 80's. We're talking arcade games of Donkey Kong, Frogger, Q*bert, PacMan and Mrs PacMan. At the begin of the movie it is explained how these classic games are very different from the new video games like Halo, Super Mario Bros, Assassins Creed, Burnout, Baldurs Gate, Final Fantasy's and The Legend of Zelda's. For that you'll have to go see it.
This is certainly worth watching. To the question, out of 10? I'd say 7.5
